From VTS to #GTS (4/10)
#GTS in the field: from community to campaign scale
VTS started with a simple operational question in polio campaigns: Did teams really reach the places they were meant to reach?
#GTS kept that question, then scaled it.
Since the early 2020s, #GTS has grown into an active community across 10 countries: Nigeria, Cameroon, DRC, Chad, Guinea, Benin, Madagascar, Comoros, Cote d’Ivoire and Togo.
It has also grown through collaboration with partners including the World Health Organization Regional Office for Africa, GRID3 and Columbia Climate School CIESIN, country teams, ministries of health, and public health programs working under real field constraints. Two campaign examples show why this matters.
In Cote d’Ivoire, during a polio campaign in Abidjan 2, #GTS helped teams identify target zones that had not yet been visited. The campaign report describes the insights as crucial for guiding mop-up efforts and turning #GPS traces into tangible, actionable evidence to improve coverage.
In Nigeria, #GTS reached another level of operational scale: millions of GPS tracks handled per day to support more than 30,000 teams in a large campaign context.
The contexts are different: large-scale polio campaigns, focused operations, routine immunization, zero-dose workstreams, social mobilization and other field activities.
But the operational need is consistent: Make field activity visible while teams can still act. For countries and organizations facing the same field question, the #GTS community is growing.
