From VTS to #GTS (3/10)
Scaling field tracking for public health
Once VTS was running in polio campaigns, the requests started coming from other programs, other countries, other contexts. The system had proven that tracking field teams against geographic targets — in near real time, on Android, without reliable connectivity — was operationally useful. The question was whether it could be taken further.
#GTS grew out of that. Same underlying logic: GPS tracks cross a geographic target, you know a team was there. But with more countries and more simultaneous campaigns to support, the architecture had to change. The web platform became centralized, multi-tenant. #ODK integration was added so you could connect movement data with what was actually delivered in the field. The system had to handle not just where teams went, but what the coverage picture looked like across an entire campaign while it was still running.
For supervisors, that last part mattered most. Missed areas that used to surface in end-of-day reports could now be spotted and acted on during operations.
Over time, #GTS expanded beyond polio into immunization campaigns, surveillance, and routine health activities — across a growing number of countries.
